Enemy at the gates
A morning just broke, and I just got home, feel tired and exhausted, plus no research progress, seems I have got enough reason to kill myself. I turned on the cable TV, and ops, a fantastic movie were playing: The Enemy at the Gates. Let me forget at least for two hours that outside myself and my TV box, there are another life.
The movie is about a super sniper: Vasilly Zaitzev, who killed 242 German armies in defending the city of Stalingrad. The war is considered as the most extraordinary battle in the modern warfare; turning point of the second world war. Well, basically the movie doesn’t really fit with the historical notes.
According the historical notes, the girl who in love to Vasilly, Tania Chernova turned herself to become a sniper after realizing that the enemy has killed Vasilly. A few year after the battle, in 1969, she learned that Vassilly had recovered and had married, a news that stunned her because she was still in love. Vasilly has married, and later settled down in the city of Kiev as a director of an engineering school.

Romance and revolution
Exactly a year ago, I read the article “Romance and Revolution” in the New York Times. A story that not only so nicely written but was also about all aspects, intertwined, a young girl may have. The girl, Dr. Dang Thuy Tram, was young at her mid twenty, trapped in the middle of Vietnam war which cares to no one, not to her.
Dr Dang is not an ordinary girl but she is an extra ordinary who has an excessive spirit and braveness. What made her up? A few lines from her uncompleted diary which ended abruptly seems to tell us more: “for a mother’s hand to care for me.” and “please come to me and hold my hand when I was so lonely.” She continued, “love me and give me strength to travel all the hard sections of the read ahead.”
On her birthday on Nov 26, 1968, she wrote: “It’s my birthday today with enemy guns sounding from all four directions. It was nothing after two years on the battlefield.” And her lost of love, “Are we really so far away from each other, beloved? Why do I feel that my heart is still bleeding?”
But she did find peace within herself: “Why I was born so rich with dreams, love, and asking so much from life?” and added, “forget all thoughts of love burning in your heart and pay attention to your job.”
And her diary seems to make every man in love.
